What is an Au Pair?

I wondered the same thing when I started looking for ways to travel to Italy back in 2021. I knew I wanted to go abroad, not just for a week, but long enough to really get to know the culture and the people. So I started Googling, and a TikTok video popped up about becoming an Au Pair. That made me ask, What even is an Au Pair?

Well, now I can tell you, because I actually became one that summer. But what I thought it was and what it actually was turned out to be pretty different.

Most people will say being an Au Pair is basically just being a nanny for a family abroad. And sure, caring for kids is part of it. But for me, it was way more than that.

I’ve heard horror stories about girls going overseas and ending up with really difficult host families. I get why that would scare people off. That’s why I want to share how I went about it and why my experience was so positive.

My Experience with Rome Abroad

I found a company called Rome Abroad through the TikTok video I mentioned earlier, and I’m honestly so glad I did. I was skeptical at first, but once I looked into the company more and actually talked to the founder (yep, the actual owner of the company), I felt a lot more confident.

Here’s how it went.

The Application and Interview

I went to Rome Abroad’s website and filled out their application. It only took about five minutes and helped figure out if I was a good fit. After I submitted it, the founder reached out and we set up a video call. She was super kind and easy to talk to. She had been an Au Pair in Italy herself and started the company to help other women travel safely and confidently.

She explained the program fees, age requirements, what to expect living with a host family, and what kind of support I’d get. Once I paid the program fee, she started looking for a host family for me. I didn’t have to search the internet or message random people. She personally matches you and makes sure the families are legit and safe.

My Host Family in Florence

The family she found for me lived in Florence and had three kids. At first, I was a little nervous because three kids sounded like a lot. But once she explained it, I felt better. The two older kids were in school all day, so I was really there to help out with the youngest, who was five. He had just started school and needed help with homework and learning English.

Before I said yes, I got to do a video call with the mom of the host family. That call made a huge difference. After seeing her face and saying hi to the kids, I felt so much more at peace. She liked me too, so we let the founder know and everything was set for me to head to Florence.

The whole process was easier and more personal than I expected. I truly felt like I was in good hands with Rome Abroad.
